BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

For Sugaring

  • Avoid exfoliation on the day of your appointment.

  • Drink lots of water! Dehydration causes the skin to tighten and can make your hair removal slightly less comfortable.

  • Avoid lotions and oils on the day of your appointment.

  • Caffeine can cause extra skin sensitivity.

  • Hair must be grown out about 14 days after your last shave. The longer the hair, the better the results!

  • Avoid spray tanning before sugaring, as it can lift the color

  • Arrive in sweatpants and a loose T-shirt. If you’re coming straight from work, please bring an extra pair of CLEAN cotton undies, loose bottom, and a loose shirt.

AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT

For Sugaring

  • Avoid Touching! It’s tempting to get your hands on your new, silky-smooth skin, but your hands carry bacteria that could potentially cause an infection in your freshly opened pores.

  • This might be hard for some; please avoid any intimacy for the next 24 hours. Any liquids (side eye), friction, and sweat can lead to irritation. Please advise your partner to admire from a distance.

  • Avoid Exercise. Sweat and bacteria could clog pores and irritate your skin.

  • Avoid lotions with fragrance, products with harsh chemicals, and exfoliation directly after your appointment.

  • As mentioned before, exfoliation is extremely important and is recommended 2-3x a week to prevent ingrown hairs, but waiting 2 days after your sugar is the best time to start.

  • For facial sugaring, avoid wearing make-up for 24 hours. The sugar naturally exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing a clean surface. Applying make-up too soon can lead to potential new acne flare-ups, irritation, and clogged pores.

  • Deodorant is an everyday necessity, BUT if you get this area sugared, it’s best to avoid deodorant for the remainder of the day. Deodorant leads to a build-up of sweat and non-organic ingredients. It is best to let your underarms breathe and get the most out of your silky smooth skin.

IN BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS

  • For Sugaring

    • Get into a routine of exfoliating and moisturizing your beautiful skin! Exfoliation 2-3x a week will help to remove dead skin buildup and give your new hair opportuthe nity to grow through the skin. But it doesn’t stop there; exfoliation without moisturizing can cause dry skin, which your new hairs can get stuck underneath. Use an all-natural oil or body butter to moisturize your skin, and if you have sensitive skin, it may be best to avoid moisturizers with fragrance. The combination of exfoliation and moisturizing will give you optimal results for soft, silky, smooth skin, and even enhance your sugaring appointments!

    • Once you begin sugaring, waiting 4-6 weeks between appointments is average and will give you the best results for hair removal.

    • To ensure the BEST results, continue to wear looser clothes for the next 2-3 days following your sugar session. This allows the hair follicle to breath and avoid any ingrowns from accruing.

CAN I GET SUGARED ON MY PERIOD?

Yes! Although it may be just a tad more painful due to being more sensitive during your time of the month, it is incredibly easy to work around a string.

HOW LONG DOES SUGARING LAST FOR?

Sugaring results last about 1.5 to 2 weeks. At that point, you will begin to see your next set of hairs growing in. Booking appointments ahead of time will get you and your hair on a cycle of hair removal, so every appointment gets easier and easier. Whenever hair is removed from the root, the following hair that grows is a new baby hair. This new baby hair is less attached within the follicle, therefore making it easier to come out. That’s why any hair removal expert will say, “The first time is always the worst.” It’s because you have the most, thickest and ingrained hair. Once you begin your sugaring journey, the easier it gets.

HOW PAINFUL IS SUGARING?

It’s no secret that sugaring is still hair removal. But in comparison to waxing, it’s a much different experience. Wax resins adhere to live skin cells, whereas sugar only adheres to the hair and dead skin cells. This means that when wax is removed, a minuscule layer of skin is removed, but when sugar is removed, it’s a good form of exfoliation. This means that sugar is more gentle on the skin. Since wax resins adhere to live skin cells, this can leave the client’s skin tender, red, and irritated. Without any minor skin lifting, sugar leaves skin gently exfoliated with little to no redness or sensitivity.

Sugar is applied to the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth, and removed in the direction of hair growth. Wax, on the other hand, is applied with the direction of hair growth, and then removed against the grain. Waxing gives hairs a larger chance of breaking, which could lead to ingrown hairs and irritation, elongating the ‘pain’ of your hair removal service. Since the sugar is removed with the hair growth, the hair has a much higher chance of being removed from the root. Therefore, sugar helps the hair to grow smoother, finer, and sparser, which essentially diminishes pain over time.

Lastly, sugar is body temperature, so you will never get burned during your hair removal appointments.

CAN I SHOWER AFTER GETTING SUGARED?

Absolutely, but be sure not to take that boiling shower we crave on a cold day. Since your hair follicles are newly empty, it’s best to avoid shocking the follicle by showering it with scorching hot water. Warm water and a clean, gentle soap with no fragrance are best to use post-sugar. After 24 hours, you may carry on with whatever type of shower you please.

IS SUGARING BETTER THAN WAXING?

It’s incredibly rare that once you try sugaring, you will go back to waxing. Most of the time, clients will even share that they’re never going back to waxing midway through their first sugaring appointment. Sugaring is a next-level form of hair removal that offers natural ingredients and a more comfortable experience throughout the hair removal process. This is because sugar only adheres to your hair and dead skin cells, whereas wax adheres to your live skin cells. That means that removing wax is more painful than sugar due to its attachment to the skin. Sugar is also a more efficient form of hair removal due to the hairs being removed with the direction of hair growth, whereas wax removes hairs against the grain, which can lead to broken hairs, ingrowns, and irritation. Since hairs are more truly removed from the root when sugaring, the new hairs that grow in will grow smoother, finer, and sparser. This can eventually lead to less discomfort due to less hair growth. Why? When hairs are frequently removed from the root, this restricts blood flow from getting to the hair follicle, which eventually will weaken the follicle.

SHOULD I SHAVE BETWEEN SUGARING?

Shaving between appointments is a big no-no. Shaving disrupts the hair’s growth cycle and can make the removal of hair much more difficult, especially if it’s too short. When sugaring on a monthly cycle, there is proper time for the hair to grow so that it is long enough to be sugared at the next appointment. Shaving will be the cause of not being able to remove all hairs, needing to push out or reschedule appointments, and, in turn, not being on a proper cycle of hair removal.

HOW COMMON ARE INGROWN HAIRS AFTER SUGARING?

Ingrown hairs are a very tricky topic. Ingrowns can come from anything between broken hairs, lack of moisture, lack of exfoliation, hormones, or the type of hair. However, sugaring has been known to help diminish ingrown hairs due to how it is applied and removed. Sugar is massaged onto the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. This bends the hairs backward so the sugar can seep into the follicle and get a stronger hold of the hair from the root. Then, the sugar is removed in the direction of hair growth. Since the hair is removed in its natural way of growth, this helps to keep the hair intact and truly remove it from the root.

In between appointments, maintenance is a big factor when it comes to avoiding ingrown hairs. Exfoliating and moisturizing are your skin’s best friends! Exfoliation will help to remove dead skin cells so that new hairs don’t get trapped under dead skin. However, exfoliation exposes new skin cells that need hydration protection. Hydrating the exfoliated area will not only keep hairs from getting trapped under dry skin, but it will also moisturize the outer layer as well as within the follicle, so the hairs have an easier time getting through the skin.
